Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Darlene Anderson
The Rotary bell rang, and President Gary Melander warmly welcomed Rotarians and guests. He invited all to join him in “The Pledge of Allegiance” and “Rotary 4-Way Test”. Past District Governor Phil Strom's Reflection reminded all of us that we live in a time dangerously challenged by military belligerence, Rotarians have a vital role in advancing the cause of peace. Rotary's Vision Statement says, “Together we see a world where people unite to take action to create lasting change across the globe, in our communities and in ourselves.” Phil Strom encouraged us to model peace-building behavior, thereby becoming a beacon of peace to the world.

Greg Hansen invited all to the Annual Rotary Dinner and Auction on April 25 at Marshall School. “Supper Club 25” begins at 5:30 and will be a wonderful evening of food, fellowship and fun. Next week Greg Hansen promises a sneak preview of the larger items that will be auctioned.

Past President Barb Perrella announced that next week's meeting will be off site at Old Central High School. The guided tour begins at noon (there will not be a lunch served). Parking is across Lake Avenue and enter via the front door off First Street. (NOTE THIS HAD TO BE RESCHEDULED.)

Once again Rotarians have been making a difference in our community. Chair of the Rotary Club of Duluth Foundation and Past President Dean Casperson presented Salvation Army Captain Anthony Nordan a check for $14,890 for their food drive. Captain Anthony Nordan noted that the funds will be matched by Minnesota Foodshare Match. Our local Salvation Army has three food programs: 1) Food shelf, 2) Lunch program Monday through Friday and 3) Minnesota's only Medical Food Shelf that provides clients with foods for special medical diets such as gluten-free or sugar-free items.

Acting as Chair of the Day, President Gary Melander introduced our own Rotary Club 25 member Bob Reichert. Bob Reichert obtained degrees in Civil Engineering and Urban Planning that led to a career in planning and consulting in various locations including Duluth. One of his favorite projects was the study he prepared for the U of M Board of Regents that led to the opening of Glensheen to the public. Today he shared a very personal story about his daughter, Dorie, and the book of her poetry and artwork just published.

Dorie was an active daughter, involved in many community service projects as a teenager. She loved to write poetry and was a gifted artist and photographer. But it was during the spring of her senior year at Marshall High School that she experienced her first bout with bi-polar disorder. Her poetry describes her experiences with it and the challenges mental illness posed for her and her family as she continued her college education. It was after her death in an automobile accident in 2003 that her struggle ended. Bob Reichert had promised Dorie that he would compile a selection of her poetry, drawings and photographs into a book and have it published.
The book
Yellow Butterfly: A Creative Talent's Struggle with Mental Illness includes an introduction by
Bob Reichert sharing Dorie's life story as she experienced the progression of mental illness. It was published in 2023. He has shared it with many in our medical community and their response has been that it is a very insightful tool for both professionals and family members dealing with mental illness. It is available now at Zenith Book Store and will be on
Amazon beginning April 9.
