January 21, 1915. The Rotary basketball team made the newspaper again. “Rotarians Win the First Engagement”, sports headlines announced.
The first engagement of the “Western Invasion” was supposed to be in Fargo on December 18th. Who knows what happened to that game. Writing from Valley City, North Dakota, on January 20th, the reporter stated, “The Duluth Rotary Club basketball team won the first game of its western trip here tonight by a score of 28 to 13.”

The star players for our team were Harris and Bradley, while Prush “featured for the Valleyites.” Dr. James G. Harris, veterinary surgeon and proprietor of J. G. Harris at 9 West 1st Street, had been a Duluth Rotary club member since 1913.
The reporter added that Billings, Montana, backed out of the scheduled game, but “The Rotaries will meet the Jamestown Five tonight.” With Fargo and Billings eliminated and a win in Valley City, our team still would face six more opponents in Jamestown, Aberdeen, Bismarck, Dickinson, Beach and Miles City before returning home. Could they sustain their winning streak? |
