Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting

By Darlene Anderson
With the ringing of the Rotary Bell, President Barb Perrella called to order this week's meeting and invited members to join her in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and the Rotary 4-Way Test.  Coming to the podium to deliver her first Rotary Reflection, Roxanna Esquerra invited us to have the courage it takes to face challenges, whether at work or home. It takes true courage to face uncomfortable situations and conversations head-on with your whole heart. But this is the way to ultimately overcome adversary and succeed.

Allen Anway shared the story of how his membership sponsor Dr. Tom Walker, senior minister at First United Methodist Church, invited him to join Rotary Club 25. As it happened, Dr. Walker moved from Duluth before he could make the formal introduction of Allen Anway to Club #25. So it was James Plaunt of Plaunt Company who completed that formality 40 years ago this month. Congratulations, Allen Anway, for your 40 years of faithful membership and example of “Service Above Self” in our community.

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Race is back again this year at Barker's Island. Paula Bloomquist’s mother, a member of the Park River Rotary Club has invited Rotarians from Club #25 to paddle with their team called the Wavemakers on August 26 and 27. If you are interested, please contact President Barb Perrella or Paula Bloomquist’s for more details. The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival is a fundraiser for the 23rd Veteran organization.

Jenna Hensler from The Wildcat Sanctuary located in Sandstone, MN presented “The Truth About the Captive Wildlife Crisis”. The mission of the sanctuary is to provide natural sanctuary to wild cats in need and to inspire change to end the captive wildcat crisis. Beginning in 1999 at Isanti, Minnesota they had the vision to create a world where no wildlife sanctuaries are needed. Then in 2006, they moved to Sandstone, where they have 85 acres and now house over 100 cats. This is accomplished with a staff of 12 full-time employees, an internship program for 10, and an annual budget of $2 million.

The Wildcat Sanctuary is a home for life, a rescue operation for wild cats that are born into captivity or for wild-born orphans. It is a place of refuge where abused, neglected, unwanted or displaced wild cats are provided with care for their lifetime. They do not buy, sell, exhibit, trade, auction, lease or breed any of their resident cats. It is an educational resource for those wanting to learn more about the Captive Wildlife Crisis.  You can also learn more about the sanctuary at www.wildcatsanctuary.org.

The meeting closed with the 50/50 drawing, where for the 19th time, Gary Melander held the winning ticket. This ties him with his father for the “most wins record.”
