The Vision is Set. It's Time for Takeoff!
The Duluth International Airport is more than the sum of its runways, planes and people. It’s also a promise — a promise to provide an exceptional customer experience; every customer, every time. Leading this promise is Executive Director, Tom Werner. Recently completing a master plan for the Duluth International Airport, Tom will detail the next 20 years’ growth and development that will support the region’s economy. Join us to learn what the future holds for the Duluth International Airport and its travelers.
Chair of the Day Past President Sandy Hoff

Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Steve Yorde

President Barb Perrella welcomed all to the Rotary Club of Duluth meeting by leading members and guests in the Pledge of Allegiance and Rotary’s 4-Way Test.  Vinod Gupta’s thoughtful Reflection connected his worldwide travel experiences and resulting benefits, primarily happiness.  “Reflect on diversity, and keep traveling” to learn new customs, meet new people and gain understanding.
Past President Chana Stocke recounted the rescue mission
NOTE: The following was submitted by your friendly Gimlet Editor due to a ZOOM malfunction - The highlight of self-reports was courtesy of Past President Chana Stocke. While attending the Rotary ZONE gathering in the Twin Cities with President Barb Perrella, Past Prez Chana noticed that President Barb had gone missing…  Well, in fact, President Barb Perrella was not “missing” – but rather trapped!  While visiting a lady's washroom in a newer Radisson Blu property near the Mall of America, Prez Barb had the misfortune of a door handle malfunction.  Actually, the door handle to the washroom fell off!  President Barb, facing ladies' room purgatory, saw flashing images of her Club #25 presidency going down the toilet…  After about 30 minutes had passed, Past President Chana Stocke became concerned that she may have been left abandoned by her successor. Upon further investigation, Past Prez Chana found where the wayward Prez Barb had gone and made a heroic rescue.  No harm, nor foul - only egos were bruised.

(L to R) Members of the Denfeld Robotics team, Jack Seiler, Dave Schaeffer from Chester Bowl, with Zack Walters
Once the laughter subsided, President Barb Perrella turned to Announcements and introduced Grants Committee chair Jack Seiler who presented $2,000 to help the Denfeld Robotics team construct a new robot, and $1,500 for Chester Bowl’s ski and snowboard scholarships.  She reminded us that our Rose Sale efforts support these worthy projects.

(L to R) Jon Ohman, Past Assistant Governor Phil Strom and Geiger Yount

Rose Sale co-chair Jon Ohman reported that our new provider of roses this year is requesting an estimate of our current and anticipated sales prior to their delivery of our roses.  Please provide your estimate to Jon as soon as possible.  Past Assistant District Governor Phil Strom is our current sales leader with 167 dozen sold already.  Phil also reported on an October 22 fundraiser for Ukraine at the Barker’s Island Inn.  Geiger Yount thanked the Club for its support of the Lake Superior Harvest Festival which brought in $4,428.  Rob Hofmann and Stacy Oltmanns were thanked for hosting a Junior Rotarian orientation luncheon yesterday.  President Barb Perrella noted that our October 6 noon meeting at the Depot would be the first for Junior Rotarians. Remember, our next Rotary Breakfast at the Kitchi Gammi Club is Friday October 21st!

Speakers Phillip Anderson, Tom Morgan with President Barb Perrella
Chair of the Day Geiger Yount introduced Veterans for Peace members Tom Morgan and Phillip Anderson speaking about the upcoming voyage of The Golden Rule, a wooden sailboat that was originally used to protest above-ground testing of nuclear weapons by the United States.  The first voyage in 1958 was intended to sail into the atmospheric testing area in the Marshall Islands.  But crew members were arrested and jailed in Hawaii before its protest began. The boat and its crew became an inspiration for subsequent environmental and peace activities, including Greenpeace.  The boat seemed to be lost to history until its hull was located in Eureka, California and restored by 2015.  It returned to its original mission and inspired the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons in 2017. Tom and Phillip are raising awareness and funds for the boat’s current voyage beginning in Minneapolis, traveling down the Mississippi, along the Gulf Coast, around Florida, up the Intracoastal Waterway and back to the Midwest via the Great Lakes.  The voyage is expected to take 15 months, cover 11,000 miles and stop in 100 cities and towns where “Golden Rule Ambassadors” will conduct educational presentations on the dangers of nuclear weapons proliferation.  It will conclude in December 2023.

Both of our speakers are Vietnam-era combat veterans who have been working on peaceful solutions for many years.  “We are not against the military, we are against militarism in all forms.”  They cited what a nuclear war and could mean for all of humanity. “There are enough nuclear weapons today to destroy the entire world, the threat today is the greatest it has ever been, especially with current threats to Taiwan and Ukraine.”
