Duluth's Grand Old Architecture
Duluth’s Grand Old Architecture 1870–1940, the newest book by Duluthian Tony Dierckins and the late Maryanne C. Norton, is the result of ten years of research by the authors of Lost Duluth. Dierckins describes the journey of creating the book—which features over 300 historic structures illustrated by 425 vintage images—and provides a sneak peek at some of the book’s most fascinating buildings and homes. The Chair of the Day will be Branden Robinson
Highlights from Last Week’s Meeting
By Al Makynen
There was a new sheriff in town. With President Barb Perrella away on vacation, President-Elect Gary Melander called to order his first meeting. Rob Hofmann provided the Rotary Reflection on the many reasons to become a Rotarian. Friendship, Citizenship, and Leadership were listed. The best reason is to have fun. Who would not want to join an organization that makes a difference in the world and has fun while doing it?

Jeff Wencl announced he was a new father with the birth of his daughter Madison on July 20. Assistant Governor Tricia Bunten announced that she is now an official empty nester with their son Ben having graduated from college and now living in Madison, Wisconsin. Jack Seiler thanked the following who turned out to assist during the Tall Ships Festival in Two Harbors: President Barb Perrella, Past President Chana Stocke, Roxanna Esguerra, Past Assistant Governor Phil Strom, Jim Schwartz, Cindy Seiler, Past President Bill Gravelle, Brian Fulda, and Dan Maki. Megan Maki, Stacy Oltmanns and Branden Robinson. Past District Governor Earl Rogers was ready, willing and able to sell tickets either for the Skyline Peach Sale or the Superior Raffle, or both!
An exciting time for any Rotary Club is the introduction of a new member. Past President Mike Orman had the honor to introduce Jeff Wencl an associate attorney with his firm Beaumier, Trogdon, Orman, Hurd & Viegas. In addition to being an attorney, Jeff Wencl is a Lieutenant Commander, US Navy Reserve currently serving as a Foreign Affairs Officer on the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Assistant Governor Tricia Bunten introduced a fellow Rotarian who has visited our club often, Past Assistant Governor (2017-18), Debra Warner of the Virginia Club.

Debra has experienced Rotary on the local, district, zone and international level. She shared with us a journey that has taken her around the world. The 46,000 clubs is where much of the work of “service above self” happens. Community service projects, fundraising for grants, and fellowship are the life blood of Rotary. For those who might like to travel there are opportunities to participate in service projects, experience a friendship exchange, attend an international convention, or serve at the District or Zone level. As part of her passion in Rotary Debra has traveled to many countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Uganda, Haiti, Guatemala, and India. With passion anything can be accomplished. Service, fellowship, and fun are part of the equation in Rotary where you can experience a philosophy of life “to plant a tree under whose shade you do not expect to sit”.
